Track record for innovation

Furlong Flooring has a strong track record for innovating solutions to common customer challenges. We are Ireland’s only tufted carpet manufacturer and pioneered the development of bleach cleanable carpets, followed by the creation of soft, flexible yet durable Combi-bac for enhanced product performance and effortless fitting within completed homes. We also introduced the ground-breaking Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) to provide robust ‘floating’ floor solutions to sub-floor issues. As leaders in our industry, we are committed to providing our partners with comprehensive training on cutting-edge product fitting techniques for new products.

Our history

Furlong Flooring was established in Ireland in 1980 and in the years that followed, steadily expanded throughout the Republic through organic growth and acquisition. In the early 1990’s we expanded to the United Kingdom, establishing three distribution centres for easy access throughout England, Scotland and Wales. Similarly in 1994, we moved to a 160,000 square foot purpose-built warehouse located beside the M50 motorway in Dublin where we remain today, giving us easy access for distribution to the Irish market. In 1995, Furlong Flooring acquired its own spinning and tufting company based in Co. Down, and in 1998, in response to changes in flooring preferences, we entered the market for wood and laminate flooring. Today, the Furlong Flooring Group is the largest manufacturing distributor of flooring products in Europe with an annual turnover in excess of €100 million.

Our founder, Noel Furlong

Noel Furlong is widely regarded as one of Ireland’s most admired and vibrant business leaders. Born on 28 December 1937, he was named in honour of his Christmas arrival. Noel’s foray into flooring began in 1973 when he launched his first flooring retail store in Dun Laoghaire. He grew the business substantially before expanding first into wholesale, and then manufacturing. He opened Furlong Flooring’s first wholesale depot in 1980 which was followed by three more wholesale centres in the United Kingdom, and a manufacturing facility in County Down. Today, the Furlong Flooring Group is Europe’s largest Carpet flooring manufacturing distributor with a turnover in excess of €100 million.

With razor sharp business acumen and a witty sense of humour, Noel’s primary focus has always been his business, although he is also interested in horse racing and poker. In fact, his horse Destriero won the 1991 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle in Cheltenham. Noel is also renowned as the winner of the World Series Poker Main Event in 1999, and for being one of the only poker players in history to win the Irish Poker Open twice, in 1987 and 1989. Today, Noel still ranks among the top Irish poker players, although he has not played in several years.

Environmental commitment

Our commitment to the environment is central to our core values and underlined by our ISO 14001 accreditation. Our Bangor, Co. Down manufacturing facility now draws on wind turbine power which contributes to 33% of plant’s energy consumption. It also uses a closed loop water cooling system which increases efficiency by 30% and has successfully phased out 80% of systems using freon refrigerants.

We have invested significantly in the development of initiatives that reduce waste, increase recycling and empower our teams to think and act sustainably.  We have focused on eliminating waste at our manufacturing facility in Co Down and in particular now manufacture longer rolls to reduce the need for sewing and subsequent waste. Unused yarn and cardboard is separated and sent for recycling, while waste finished carpet is bundled and recycled for use in the equine industry. Excess latex is dried and made into bricks for recycling. No solid waste is sent to landfill, while similarly, no liquid waste reaches drainage systems as all waste water is collected, purified and recycled. Our Luxury Vinyl Tiles range is made from 35-50% recycled materials and has been awarded the Recovinyl Plus label by EuCertPlast Scheme. Even our delivery vehicles are moving to align with revised Low Emission Zone targets.

These achievements have been underpinned by our development of the B.E.S.T Initiative, Better Environmental Solutions Together. This ground-breaking initiative enables us to accurately evaluate our environmental management processes from manufacturing through to distribution, and achieve effective, sustainable solutions that create positive outcomes for our company, our customers and the planet.
